Meta is developing a powerful AI model to compete with OpenAI’s flagship system.

According to an exclusive report from The Wall Street Journal, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram,

is in the process of developing a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that will directly compete with OpenAI’s most advanced system.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that Meta’s objective is to create an AI model that surpasses the capabilities of their previously released Llama 2 model,

aiming for it to be “several times” more powerful.

Notably, Meta intends to make the new AI model open-source,

granting other companies the ability to leverage it for high-level text generation, analysis, and other outputs.

In preparation for this ambitious endeavor,

Meta has been establishing data centers capable of supporting such a high-level system.

Furthermore, the company actively acquires Nvidia’s H100 semiconductor chips,

recognized as the market’s most powerful and highly sought-after chips.

While the parameters for OpenAI’s GPT-4 have not been officially disclosed,

estimates suggest they could reach approximately 1.5 trillion, whereas Meta’s Llama model was trained on 70 billion parameters.

This development highlights the intensifying competition in the AI sector as companies strive to push the boundaries of AI capabilities.

Sources indicate that Meta plans to commence training its large language model (LLM) in early 2024 and intends to release it sometime next year.
