Near Foundation CEO, Marieke Flament, steps down.

Marieke Flament, CEO of Near Foundation, the developer of the Near Protocol, has announced her resignation.

The announcement on September 21 states that Chris Donovan, the general counsel of Near Foundation, will assume the role of CEO following Flament’s departure.

While Flament did not provide a specific reason for her resignation, the transition to new leadership marks a notable development for the organization.

“Two years ago, I had never heard of NEAR. Upon doing a bit of research and after several conversations it became clear that NEAR had a tremendous potential – fantastic tech, a diverse and vibrant community and a world of open possibilities, and so I joined.”

During her tenure, Flament highlighted impressive growth statistics for Near Protocol.

From 2021 to 2023, the daily active user count surged from 50,000 to 3 million, while the number of Twitter followers skyrocketed from 200,000 to over 2 million.

Additionally, Near Protocol received extensive media coverage, with more than 2,000 pieces of press coverage highlighting its progress.

Furthermore, Near Protocol forged significant partnerships during this period.

Notable collaborations include SWEAT, Playember, Circle, Ledger, Alibaba, Amazon, Google, KPMG, Cosmose AI, SailGP, The Littles, PipeFlare, Shemaroo, Kakao Games, Inven/Vortex, and Netmarble/Marblex in Korea.

These partnerships demonstrate the broad industry reach and growing influence of Near Protocol in various sectors.

Furthermore, Flament revealed that the Near Foundation currently holds a treasury balance of 330 million NEAR, which is valued at approximately $350 million.

This substantial financial reserve underscores the foundation’s robust position and financial stability.

Summing up her leadership strategy, Flament emphasized the remarkable growth achieved during her tenure, with Near Protocol experiencing a remarkable surge in daily active users from 50,000 to 3 million between 2021 and 2023.

Flament wrote:

“My strategy has been one of driving mainstream adoption, enabling and empowering grassroot communities and continuing our journey to decentralization. Bringing onboard large web2 players, while nurturing web3 innovators has also been key to our growth.”

With a market capitalization of approximately $1.04 billion, NEAR currently holds the 40th position among the largest cryptocurrencies.

Notably, in June, Škoda Auto, the Czech automobile conglomerate, made a significant move by introducing a non-fungible token (NFT) platform built on the Near Protocol.
